Leviathans are the apex underwater predators in Subnautica 2 — the largest and most dangerous creatures in the Ariadne Arm ocean. Unlike regular predators, Leviathans are invulnerable and cannot be killed. Your only option is to avoid or outrun them.
All Confirmed Leviathans in Subnautica 2
The Early Access build (May 2026) ships with 2 named Leviathan species plus a juvenile variant:
Tyrannoteuthis phobocoeus — the tyrant squid of fearful curiosity
Health1,000 (invulnerable)
Swim Speed5.0 m/s
Bulk40
Spawn Points4 (Graveyard, Overgrown Ruins, Sparse Plains)
Scan Time4 seconds
TargetsPlayer, Tadpole, Pearl Stash, Hiding Spots
An enormous cephalopod predator. Solitary but highly intelligent. The Collector has four long hunting tentacles with bioglass claws, an enormous beak capable of tearing through plate titanium, and a biological phased-array sonar organ that broadcasts complex multi-part pulses.
Assessment: Hunters with varied and difficult diets are likely to be intelligent and inquisitive. Any small submersible or habitat is likely to draw the Collector's interest. Avoid open water near rocky shelves.
Skythopterygion atropos — the scythe-finned fate-ender
Health1,000 (invulnerable)
Swim Speed5.0 m/s
BehaviourPack hunter (Shiver formation)
TargetsPlayer, Tadpole, Large submarines
LocationVoid zones beyond the crust shelf
A sexually dimorphic open-water predator. Females are much larger than males and carry long-range towed-array sonar organs. Males are smaller and faster, hunting in coordinated shivers led by a single female. The pack will engage almost anything that enters open ocean.
Assessment: Sophisticated, dangerous predator. Avoid the void zones beyond the crust shelf until you have a depth-rated craft.
Variant: Shiver Leviathan (Juvenile) — smaller, found closer to the map edge.
Leviathans vs Subnautica 1
In the original Subnautica, Leviathans (Reaper, Ghost, Sea Dragon) could technically be killed with enough Stasis Rifle + Knife hits. In Subnautica 2, all Leviathans are completely invulnerable — this is confirmed by Unknown Worlds as an intentional design decision. No returning creatures from Subnautica 1 appear in the sequel.
Subnautica 2 Leviathans FAQ
How many Leviathans are in Subnautica 2?
There are 2 named Leviathan species at Early Access launch: the Collector Leviathan and the Shiver Leviathan (also called Void Leviathan). A juvenile Shiver variant also exists. More may be added during the 2-3 year Early Access period.
Can you kill Leviathans in Subnautica 2?
No. All Leviathan-class creatures are invulnerable in Subnautica 2. This is a deliberate design choice by Unknown Worlds. You must avoid or outrun them.
Is the Reaper Leviathan in Subnautica 2?
No. The Reaper Leviathan, Ghost Leviathan, and Sea Dragon Leviathan do not appear in Subnautica 2. All creatures are brand new, set on a different alien ocean planet.
Where do Leviathans spawn in Subnautica 2?
The Collector Leviathan spawns in the Graveyard, Overgrown Ruins, and Sparse Plains biomes (4 total spawn points). The Shiver Leviathan patrols the void zones beyond the crust shelf — the open ocean edges of the map.
